Seriously, number twenty-nine

..as in, the twenty-ninth blog or other means for writing I've given myself. Let's just see if I can keep up with them all:
1) Twitter - easy enough, little pressure to do so, anyway. (@katieklein)
2) Tumblr - could be easy enough, if I remember to share things I come across in the internet world/my head (fancy-claps.tumblr.com)
3) This - (just wanted to keep w/ the "T"s) Well, I have to come up with its purpose first, I guess. And, okay, I know that that's not exactly 29, but I just have a thing with that number (a self-centered thing, but whatever, a thing's a thing, amiright?) and I wanted to be able to remember the link for this because "whatupparis.blogspot.com" didn't stick for me. And really, it is kind of almost the 29th thing, because all means of writing don't exist on the internet. And I have about four or five (if we're including notes, travel journals, etc.) outside of this dangerous world.

So, I need some kind of system. Or rule (role, really) for using this blog, to make it worthwhile. Plz make suggestions. I already have in existence the things mentioned above, in addition to a journal of collected letters, a creative writing (ha! ze most pathetic) notebook, a journal of the dear diary variety, and a notebook that contains different lists, a wine log, and random quotes to remember (there are actually several of these in existence, but only one with me right now). So what is left? What's suitable for the internet and potential public viewing? Things to avoid suggesting: pop culture news (don't follow it) - poetry (not good enough) - can't think of more now, but fr real leave me some comments or something and I'll get on top of making sure I actually use this.

Okay that's it for now. Give me motivation to come back later. Au revoir

  1. ok i wanted to comment on this but i didn't really have any [great] ideas because i can't even hold down a blog of my own. dauntingness!

maybe just blog about topical stuff? like when you hear something in the news or see it online somewhere or something. reblog it and add some commentary? i would probs lol at that. this is what i tried to do with my wordpress account. but i waited like a week without blogging and then that somehow turned into a month and now i feel weird about blogging. it's like that whole - the longer you wait - thing.

anyway- re: personal essays, an art that dates back to ancient greeks and some such but probably really started with michel de montaigne (wut wut frenchness). anyway, the best-seller in this category is america's own david sedaris. but his hilarious/realistic/silly/poignant combo is nearly impossible to replicate (many in my nonfix classes tried and faiiiiled). but you're funny so i still think this genre would be good for you. (my reason for "quitting that bitch" was because there are only so many times you can write and rewrite about your former religiousness/decent into sexuality/judge the love of your parents up against society's concepts of love. didn't i have you read one of my essays about this? i think i did. sorry btw. - seri idk what my problem was but i couldn't diversify content whatsoever. see also: any poem i've written.)

anyway! let not my down-and-outedness in regards to writing deter you! my fav personal essays are (cliche):
    "the crack-up" by fscott fitz
"goodbye to all that" by joan didion (she's a master in this genre and a fan fav)
    "late victorians" by richard rodriguez
"sex and the sick bed" by jennifer glaser

i can't think of any more right now. and idk if those are even online to read. basically with the personal essay you're storytelling with a confessional tone but with the voice of someone who has distance/wisdom on the subject. but you're showing that you aren't an expert at the same time. think earnestness with a big scoop of self-deprecation but an implied shrug.

you're saying something about society or life by sharing your own experiences. you don't have to analyze them too hard in the text but you can. (most people in my class wrote about sexual assault and or past bf/gfs - which they did NOT have distance on. sappy boring mess.)

anyway i gotta go apply for jobs. just remember - i am only writing about personal essays so you will write them so i can read them and lol to myself. honestly after taking 'the american short story' i wished so so hard that i had taken more fiction. fiction is awesome. i actually read 90% of the assigned material (instead of the usual 50%). but making up shit is hard. one time i wrote a story and i basically copied it from law & order and no one in my class fell for it. :(

    k ttysoons!

ps - here is a link to a JSF story that is pretty hipstery but also personal essayish. http://web.archive.org/web/20050113085833/www.newyorker.com/printable/?fiction/020610fi_fiction
